Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
