A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.
International terror listing and prosecution case
Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.
Authorities in Germany state the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.
Trial details and cross-border allegations
The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.
Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.
Historical background and organizational structure
The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.
Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.
Prior legal cases and international reactions
A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.
America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.
“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
